Gone with the Wind
is a historical novel by Margaret Mitchell, first published in 1936.
Set in the American South before, during, & after the Civil War. The
novel follows Scarlett O’Hara (played by Vivien Leigh), a strong-willed
Southern woman, as she navigates love, loss, war, & the collapse of the
antebellum (pre–Civil War) Southern way of life. The story begins on
Southern plantations in Georgia, where wealth & social status
are tied to slavery & land. When the Civil War erupts, that world
is slowly destroyed. Scarlett experiences famine, poverty, death, &
moral compromise as she does whatever she must to protect herself &
her family estate, Tara. Alongside the historical backdrop, the
novel is driven by complicated romantic relationships, especially
Scarlett’s obsessive love for one man & her emotional resistance to
another.
