Al Davis was a legendary American football executive best known as the longtime owner, general manager, & driving force behind the Oakland Raiders franchise (now the Las Vegas Raiders). Davis served as commissioner of the American Football League (AFL) & played a key role in the AFL–NFL merger, which created the modern NFL & the Super Bowl. He became head coach & general manager of the Raiders in 1963, then later acquired ownership. Under his leadership, the Raiders won three Super Bowl titles (XI, XV, XVIII). Davis was also known for openly fighting the NFL & its commissioners in court & in public, especially over team relocations & league control.
