Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace is set decades before the original trilogy & follows the early events leading to the rise of Darth Vader & the Empire. The story begins when the Trade Federation places a blockade around the peaceful planet Naboo as part of a political dispute with the Galactic Republic. The Republic sends Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn (played by Liam Neeson) & his apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi (played by Ewan McGregor) to negotiate. The Federation, secretly guided by the Sith Lord Darth Sidious (played by Ian McDiarmid) attempts to kill them. The Jedi’s escape & discover the invasion is underway. On Naboo, they rescue Queen Padmé Amidala (played by Natalie Portman) & flee the planet. Their ship is damaged, forcing them to land on the desert world of Tatooine for repairs. On Tatooine, they meet Anakin Skywalker (played by Jake Lloyd), a young boy with exceptional piloting skills. Qui-Gon senses he is unusually strong in the Force & may be the chosen one destined to bring balance. Darth Maul (played by Ray Park) duels with Qui-Gon & Obi-Wan Kenobi, bringing Qui-Gon to his death but before he asks for Anakin to be trained by Obi-Wan.
