The Hustler (1961) follows Fast Eddie Felson (played by Paul Newman) a talented young pool hustler who believes he can beat the legendary pool champion Minnesota Fats (played by Jackie Gleason). The story begins with Eddie traveling the country hustling pool games for money. Determined to prove he's the best, he challenges Minnesota Fats to a marathon high-stakes match in New York. Although Eddie is skilled enough to compete, his arrogance and lack of discipline lead to a crushing defeat. Afterward, Eddie becomes involved with Sarah Packard (played by Piper Laurie), a troubled woman struggling with her own demons & Bert Gordon (played by George C. Scott), a ruthless gambler who sees potential in Eddie & offers to bankroll his career. Eddie's journey becomes less about pool & more about learning what it takes to be a winner & whether success is worth the sacrifices required.
