Jim Valvano known as “Jimmy V,” was a legendary American college basketball coach, broadcaster, & motivational speaker best remembered for his passion, humor, & inspirational impact far beyond sports. Valvano was the head coach of North Carolina State University & led the Wolfpack to a stunning 1983 NCAA men’s basketball championship, defeating the heavily favored Houston team in one of the greatest upsets in college basketball history. After that final buzzer, Valvano famously ran around the court looking for someone to hug a moment that became one of the most recognizable images in sports. After his coaching career, Valvano became a popular ESPN college basketball analyst. In 1993, Valvano gave an unforgettable speech at the ESPY Awards after being diagnosed with terminal cancer. His message about perseverance, laughter, & hope ending with his famous quote “Don’t give up. Don’t ever give up.” is still quoted today.
