Thomas Edison was an inventor & entrepreneur best known for his major contributions to electric power, motion pictures & sound recording. He is often regarded as one of the most prolific inventors in history. Edison improved earlier designs to create a long-lasting, commercially viable electric light known as the light bulb. He also created the phonograph which was the first device capable of recording & reproducing sound & his labs developed the kinetoscope, an early movie-viewing device, which helped start the film industry. In 1882 Edison built the first commercial power station, helping to bring widespread electricity to cities & founded several companies, including General Electric (GE), which remains a major global corporation today.
